Bob's Running Log

Lest you think all I do is speak geek, let me get the running log going.

June 1, 2005: Birmingham, AL - 3 Miles: Neighborhood
This is the first run since the ankle/knee injury 2 weeks ago. The run went good despite the 90 degree temperatures. It is good to be running again. I listened to a Dawn and Drew Show podcast and just took it easy. No pain!

Data:

Distance: 3
Time: 30:13
Average heart rate: 165
Pace: 10:4

Format: I will always post the most recent log entry here on the main page. I will copy the last post and add it as a comment to this post. When I run in new places, I will Bold-Color the name of the place in the entry and describe the route.

April 23, 2005: Birmingham, Alabama - Statue To Statue Race (The South's Toughest 15K)

This is a race I have successfully run every year since 2001. It is a grueling 15k (9.3 miles) from the Vulcan to the Liberty Statues in Birmingham. There are 2 hills where upon beginning the accent, one simply has to accept that walking is faster then running. It is hard for a self-described runner to walk during a "run". The weather today started off quite cool, 55 degrees (I gave up a cotton t-shirt that I used to stay warm), but sunny. The race started a little late. I ran a 1:23:45 , a 9:00 per mile pace. That's not bad for me, especially in such a hard race. In fact, I just looked up last year's results and I got better by 10 minutes!

The Birmingham Track Club has some information on the race, and will post results.

April 26, 2005: Birmingham, Alabama - Neighborhood 3 Miler

I ran my usual 3 mile course. My neighborhood includes some significant hills, so it is a good work out. I knock off a steep hill in the first and last .5 mile. The route includes 1 loop around our lake (about 1 mile). The weather was in the mid 60's and clear. It was an afternoon run. I listened to Cake's latest CD and didn't even bother to take a watch.

I ran my usual 5 mile course. My neighborhood includes some significant hills, so it is a good work out. I knock off a steep hill in the first and last .5 mile. I went around the lake 3 times (about 3 miles). The weather was in the mid 60's and clear. It was an evening run. I listened to Shinedown CD. I collected data tonight which I will list below.

I saw some goslings tonight. I always feel like I am sharing joy with the geese parents. Lots of folks were fishing including one man who was fly fishing. Fly fishing looks so musical and graceful to me.

Data:

Distance: 5 miles
Time: 47:56
Average heart rate: 159 beats per minute
Pace: 9:35 per mile - slow :(

I ran my usual 3 mile course. The weather was in the mid 70's and clear. It was an evening run. I listened to latest The Strokes latest CD, Room on Fire. Their Is This It? CD is one of my favorite running collections. Room on Fire is good, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the older CD. I collected data tonight which I will list below.

I felt kind of tired in the last 1/2 mile, coming up the big hill. It is all a part of training; sometimes you feel strong, sometimes you don't.

Data:
Distance: 3 miles
Time: 28:54
Average heart rate: 158 beats per minute
Pace: 9:38 per mile - slow :(

May 1, 2005: Birmingham, Alabama - 11 Miles: Brownell - Lakeshore Circle

My friend Lito was there at 6:30 am. We got prepared and took off in temperatures below 50. The sky was clear and it was a beautiful morning. I started the music on Staind (kickass running tunes). The route is one big circle as follows:

Leave Brownell (next to Robert Jemison Jr. Park on Moutain Brook Pkwy)
Travel through Robert Jemison Jr. Park. to first interection (Overbrook Rd)
Go left on Overbrook Rd
Go left on Winthrop Ave, right on Norman Dr, and left on Clarendon (just a few blocks total)
Left on Montevallo Rd S.
Stay on Montevallo even after it turns into Hollywood Blvd and Oxmoor Rd
Left on Ridge Rd
Left on Roseland Dr
Left on Edgewood Blvd which will turn into S Forest Dr
Go right on Saulter Rd and left at the stop sign
Continue to Green Springs Highway, go left
Continue until just over Lakeshore Dr where you pick Shades Creek Greenway
The Greenway will take all the way to Brookwood Village Mall and subsequently back to Brownell

Whew! Yes, it is a long way, but a scenic and non-redundant 11 miles. It did warm up significantly before we finished. I was wearing long sleeve coolmax and wishing for a singlet.

Data:

Distance: 11 miles
Time: 1:32:00
Average heart rate: 163 beats per minute
Pace: 8:22 per mile

I took off in temperatures in the midst 60's and clear skies in the afternoon. I listened to Dawn and Drew's May 1 Podcast. It is unusual for me to listen to anything other than music during a run. The exchanged their usual funny banter and engaged in a diatribe about selling out since they are part of some arrangement with the PodShow. PodShow is a venture Adam Curry and a few others are kicking off to raise the level of Podcasting. Listening to Dawn talking about being an artist and spending time thinking about commercialism and its impact on the art reminds me of my thread on open source (which I am still working on).

As a side note, I thought some about my first novel. I know you are thinking, "Bob, you've written a novel?". Well, not yet, but I have outlined one in my head. Starting to wonder if blogging might provide an opportunity to get something created.

Data:

Distance: 3 miles
Time: 29:07
Average heart rate: 156 beats per minute
Pace: 9:42 per mile (so slow after 8:22's for 11 miles)

I took off in temperatures in the low 70's and cloudy skies in the afternoon. I listened to Dawn and Drew's May 2 Podcast. The gummy bear saga continues and is quite a hoot. If you are not uptodate with the gummy bear saga, go listen to the last few podcasts from Dawn and Drew (link in my podcast log). I ended the run listening to Oasis. I am wondering if the listening to talking, instead of music, is affecting my pace. Can I blame Dawn and Drew for my slow times? Yeah, that's the ticket.

Today's run was definitely a "mental" run. I didn't feel like doing it, but it was time to do it anyway. So, my mind said run. My body just succumbed to the pressure.

Data:

Distance: 5 miles
Time: 48:51
Average heart rate: 151 beats per minute
Pace: 9:46 per mile (slow)

May 8, 2005: Birmingham, Alabama - 11 Miles: Brownell-Lakeshore Circle

I took off in temperatures in the low 60's and clear skies at 6:30 am. I missed Friday's run and as I posted previously, I wasn't quite up to par on the Wednesday run. I also skipped Saturday's usual bodyshaping class at the gym. I usually go to the gym twice a week to work the non-running parts and the running parts differently. I am definitely fighting off some allergy stuff. But, the run was strong, but not as fast as last week with Lito. I listened to my new Wilco CD on the mp3. It was more mellow than I normally like to run with, but since it was the first selection, this was a good thing probably. I finished with Kid Rock, Devil without a Cause. I did like the Wilco CD.

I will spare details, but thank goodness there was a portable potty along the route. One of the advantages of this route is that there is almost always some kind of construction going on along the way. Thus, portable potties are available.

Data:

Distance: 11 miles
Time: 1:40:01
Average heart rate: 161 beats per minute
Pace: 9:09 per mile

May 15, 2005: Birmingham, Alabama - 11 Miles: Brownell-Lakeshore Circle

It was storming at 4:00 in the morning and I didn't know if I was going to be able to start at my usual 6:30 am. But, the clouds dumped and left in time. Lito came down, but went a shorter distance in a different direction. Alas, I ran slow since he wasn't with me. I got caught up on the Daily Source Code and Dawn and Drew podcasts.

I enjoyed listening to Adam's descriptions of some aircraft maintenance log entries and their associated repair entries. It reminded of an instance in my own history where a pilot said, "the screen looks like a rabbit sitting on a fence." We, the avionics repair folks, wrote "shot rabbit, tore down fence" as the corrective action.

As to the run, I felt like I ran strong.

Data:

Distance: 11 miles
Time: 1:39:38
Average heart rate: 159 beats per minute
Pace: 9:03 per mile (much better)

I took off at 6:30 pm in warm temperatures and clear skies. I listened to the Black Eyed Peas, Elephunk CD. I love this CD with its great mix of hip-hop, rap, rock, and other styles. These folks make great listening, dancing, and running music. The run felt great and left me energetic and pumped at the end.

Data:

Distance: 3 miles
Time: 27:58
Average heart rate: 155 beats per minute
Pace: 9:19 per mile

May 22, 2005: Birmingham, Alabama - 11 Miles: Brownell - Lakeshore Circle

I had an incredible headache last night. I took an alieve, but it took a long time for the headache to ease. Thus, I slept very poorly. I was not able to get myself out the door for my usual run at 6:30 am. It was much closer to 9:00 am today. Which made for much warmer temperatures and few accompanying runners. By the way, I forgot to mention how I was humbled last week by a female runner that passed me pushing a jogging stroller containing a baby of about 6 months of age. It is hard for me to imagine running that fast pushing a stroller with 6 months of giving birth. I am not worthy.

I took the GPS today instead of the heart rate monitor. I wanted to get an accurate measure of the run. Alas, I discovered about 4 minutes into the run that the GPS part of the watch was not incrementing. I hit the button to select distance (again!) and it started. So, I didn't get an accurate measurement. I did measure the un measured part with my car and got .5 miles. I will try again next week. My Rio Carbon stopped at about 90 minutes into the run too. Damn electronics. Slow, but steady run today. Not bad considering the warm temperatures (80+).

Data:

Distance: 11 miles (probably closer to 10.7)
Time: 1:43:15
Average heart rate: Not measured
Pace: 9:23 per mile - slow :(

May 28, 2005: Chattanoogo, Tennessee - 3 Miles: Rivierwalk and Coolidge Park

The whole family went to Chattanooga, Tennessee for the Memorial Day weekend. We visited the aquarium, children's discovery museum, Rock City, Ruby Falls, Racoon Caverns, Incline Railway, Coolidge Park, and other local hot spots. John, our 2 1/2 year old had a blast and so did we. The Timex GPS system screwed up again, so I lost accurate measures, but had a good run anyway. Although, I did not find the 10 mile long riverwalk I heard about. :(

I skipped the long run this week. Sometimes, you just have to relax.

This was a beautiful, warm afternoon run. I ran while Betsy, my wife, picked up our son at daycare. I had to run, rush through a shower, and meet her and our usual Friday evening dinner friends by 7:00 pm. I made it. We ate at Ali Baba's in Hoover, a suburb of Birmingham. A very nice middle-eastern eatery. Great menu and well-prepared food.

Data:

Distance: 3 miles
Time: 29:43
Average heart rate: 158
Pace: 9:54 (I spotted money, $0.45 , so I slowed down to pick it up, lol)

June 16, 2005: Still nursing injury
It took over a week for the swelling to go away totally. It is still sore, but I am about to take it out on a trial run tomorrow.

June 5, 2005: Birmingham, AL - 4 Miles: Brownell - Lakeshore (Aborted, Injury)
Started out with Lito jamming to Barenaked Ladies, Maroon. First sign of trouble, the Timex (Garmin) GPS unit screws up again! I ended up dumping it along the side of the road so I could pick it up later. Second, sign of trouble (well, more then a sign), my left ankle gave way and I crashed down on my right knee. Lito said I stepped on a rock. I didn't feel it, but it would make sense. It happened at the intersection of my usual route at about 4 miles near Highway 31.

The ankle started swelling, so continuuing on the run didn't seem like a good idea. So, I turned left on 31, walking. Lito continued on. Don't think he was insensitive. I was ok to walk and why mess up his run. He was going to make sure I got there and double with a car if necessary. I got to Brownell before he did.

Icing the ankle and treating the knee with a bandaid and neosporin. I anticipate running again on Tuesday.

As to the Garwin, I am hoping the wife might see Father's Day as an opportunity for upgrade. :)

Data:

Distance: Aborted run
Time: N/A
Average heart rate: N/A
Pace: N/A
