Printing to HP Deskjet 722C from Mac via Windows Server 2008

I got a MacBook late last year. I am running Mac OS X 10.6.2. I learned how to use the network to connect to printers connected to Windows' machines, but the Mac doesn't have a driver for my ancient, but very well working HP Deskjet 722C printer. I was printing to my wife's more modern printer, but she disconnects her machine too frequently and I have to walk over with the Mac and physically connect. Yuk! I had given up when I found a gem on the Internet, How to Use a Printer Attached to a Windows XP Computer in Mac OS X, that led me to a solution.

Now, the instructions did work exactly as written for me, but contained everything I needed to resolve. Here are the key points that vary from the instructions in the article that led to my success:

Do exactly as instructed for items 1-3. Except, choose to share "Ghostscript722C"; you will see why in a moment.

I selected "HP Color LaserJet 2500 PS" for the Print Driver instead of "Apple Color LW 12/660 PS" which was not installed on my system. I just looked for something with "PS" and went with HP for obvious reasons (the printer is an HP, but I don't think it matters as long as it supports postscript).

I did have to make the registry change suggested in the instructions:

After googling the error I found the following solution on redmons homepage:

http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/redmon/

"gsprint can't find any printers because RedMon runs as the default
user which doesn't have any printers. Copy the printer configuration
in the registry from the current user to the default user. This problem
is related to using mswinpr2 on Windows NT."

And the solution is found here:
http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/redmon/muir.htm

Copying the stringvalue with *the name of the real, working
printer* (as phrased in part3) found in the registry location.
Using Start->Run->Regedit (be careful, because it can cause severe
damage to windows if something wrong is done with regedit):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Devices

f.ex. (I suppose in your case, if it was on windows 2000):
String name: "HP DeskJet 722C" (The printername)
String value: "winspool,FILE:"

To the registry location:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Devices

String name: "HP DeskJet 722C" (The printername)
String value: "winspool,FILE:"
My String value was "LPT1:", not "FILE:" though.

And, this note (also in the main article referenced above), led me to the final conclusion which worked:

I'd like to contribute one note for the instructions that other
multi-computer switchers might find useful:

With 10.3 Panther, one has the option to just share the redirected
printer as a standard Windows share instead of using Unix print services.
I basically just followed your instructions up to step 3, but then just
turned on sharing. I was then able to find the printer from the Printer
Setup Utility using the Windows Printing menu item.
However, I used the Add Printer, Advanced Tab

  • Type: Windows
  • Device: Another Device
  • URL: smb://IBMServer/Ghostscript722C (Note: "IBMServer is server name where printer is connected)
  • Name: IBMServer
  • Location:
  • Print Using: Generic PostScript Printer

And, walla, I am printing.

August 11-16: More Exercise, Listening, + Windows 7

I have had another busy week. I have managed to rebuild a computer based on the KM400-M2 motherboard. This is a Frankenstein machine. It is an ancient Gateway case, the KM400-M2 motherboard, a CD- RW, and DVD-RW from other long since retired boxes. I put in a 500GB SATA drive, booted it up with a Windows 7 installation 7 DVD and now it is running. Oh, it is my 6 year old's computer. So, my 6 year old has the most recent operating system in the house. LOL. I will be using it via RDP to check it out and play. There is nothing like putting your hands and arms in the bowels of a wrangling mess of electronics and coming out the other side with a working machine. Yeah, I still got my metal thumb.

My first impressions of Windows 7 are good. The first being that while it offers a sleeker look on the desktop and offers very readable help along the way, it did not shock me with such large differences I got distracted. Too early for me to say much as I have not yet completed a detailed analysis or a reading of someone else's detailed analysis of the changes from XP or Vista. This particular machine was running XP. I, however, use XP at work and Vista on my main personal machine. I have major hankering for a MacBook Pro. The wife has given me permission and I trying to determine if I really want to take the leap. My Toshiba Portege M200 has been cranky along quite well on Vista since I increased the RAM to 2GB. My XP boxes has to be rebooted several times a week. Meanwhile, the Vista machine could just go on and on and on and on.

Two of my team members for the upcoming USMC Ultimate Mud Run Challenge, Steve and Robin, had to withdraw because she is injured. But, I was able to secure a friend of mine, Perry Chapman and his son to be their replacements. Perry and I have done this before together and I haven't seen him in person in years. So, I am very much looking forward to it. We will still have a solid team. I am sorry that Steve and Robin can not make it. They are great team mates.

I am convinced after last week's Tri that triathletes differ from runners in that most are seriously fit. It seems to me that the spread from first to last is a lot tighter than in a run. But, it could just be my imagination. Regardless, I will continue training in all 3 sports all winter. I am not expecting big changes in my running and cycling. For swimming, however, I do have some significant work to do. I will not be logging distance and time for the most part. My swimming teacher with whom I have 1 more lesson is going to provide some workouts for me to do. This involve concentrating on various components of swimming for subsets of the total laps I will swim. So, I will be tracking distance, but not time. I have got to get my kick and breathing in shape. At least, I know where I need work.

Nov. 12-23: Run, Riding, Working, and Listening Pleasures

OK, that's a sick title. I seem to be in a constant cycle of trying to catch up on work and, for that matter, life. But, I guess that is what comes with age. You become more cognizant of how much time is left, not enough, you pile on the tasks, and you just never finish. In the current times, I guess I should be thankful I am employed and I ain't bored. Life could be worse.

I traveled to Texas last week and talked about social computing which is a topic that is growing more and more dear to me. I got more animated and fired up than I expected. But, that was a good thing to have happen while in front of an audience where you are expected to lead a conversation. I think I did well and the session was well received. In the rest of my time, I am trying to deliver on the substance of the message by working with a team of folks to actually configure, populate, and manage a social site.

I have to rave about Pandora on the iPhone. Search for a few songs you like, it finds things like it. Vote up or down on some as they come and it learns what you like. Commercial free music tailored for your taste. Totally awesome.

I got fired up while running today, after 14 miles and started ranting (play ranting anyway) and the guy who organizes the runs scolded me. "Bob, some of us are focused on finishing..." Opps, I didn't mean to irritate people, but I can get full of adrenaline and get full of myself.

Oct. 14-22: Running in Two States & Other Rambling

I'm still traveling a lot. Last week, I was in New York for an information sharing meeting between my employer and a large hardware/software platform vendor. I learned a lot and the conversations were extremely interesting. A lot of SaaS (Software as a Service), cloud computing, and collaboration stuff. These are the buzzwords of the day. But, I have to say it is amazing to watch these types of changes come along. Simple ideas really can drive big impacts to the way we think about solving problems.

I am voting for the Obama ticket, but I have to say I think Palin is getting an unfair and undue shake by the press and apparently her own party. The whole "how much she spent on clothes" brouhaha just smells like sexism and pettiness to me. I actually like listening to her talk and find that she carries me along as she does. I believe you is a tough cookie with strong leadership capabilities. I just find it interesting to see how folks polarize themselves.

Side note: I am no longer logging podcasts listening activity in Google Spreadsheets. It was just not a value adding activity. Logging it here is plenty.

I got JayBird's bluetooth stereo headset for my birthday. So far, I like them in general. I hate wired headsets. I am finding that getting a good feeling fit is difficult and that the controls are difficult to trigger while running. But, these are minor nuisances when compare to a wired headset and I suspect I will learn how to mitigate these issues with complete satisfaction. Now, let's hope for stability.
I replaced the Motorola s9 which were crap. I must have asked Motorola to honor the warranty with a replacement for 4-5 times. The warranty ran out and the last headset died like the rest. The buttons gradually stopped working and the volume buttons would start just spontaneously driving the volumn up or down complete with the beep indicating the volume button was pressed.

Crap

August 29-Sept 7: Running & Cycling in Alabama, Florida, & Texas

Yep, I have been traveling a bit. The family and I went to Seagrove Beach, Florida for Labor Day. It was a very relaxing good time. Our five year old son fully appreciates the beach and doing things together now. It was awesome to spend time with him. He just finished mastering riding his bicycle without training wheels and we did a 3.2 mile ride with him. He did great. We swam, played games, and found shells. Despite Gustav's threatening arrival, we had great weather until Monday, September 1, 2008 when the beach basically disappeared.

I spend nearly all of the work week in Dallas, Texas with colleagues from all around the world. I met some really smart people with gregarious personalities that were heavily into technology, a situation made for me. We are working on some exciting stuff touching on social networking, cloud computing, and software-as-a-service (SaaS). Definitely, cool.

I listened to these podcasts:

Despite traveling a bit, I didn't listen to many podcasts. I am in the middle of reading some architectural treatises on object orientation; Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software by Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, and John M. Vlissides; and Web 2.0: A Strategy Guide by Amy Shuen. That plus 60-70+ hour work weeks just ain't leaving any time.

July 22-August 3: Running & Cycling in Birmingham, & Vacation

What a busy 2 weeks! I ran a few times, went on vacation to Walt Disney World, ran some more, and bought the new iPhone since last blogging here.

I bought the new iPhone yesterday. I asked one of the Apple geniuses how to move my address book from the old iPhone to the new one. He told me to swap SIMs to get contacts moved using the Import from SIM feature. It didn't work. Instead, I simply plugged the new iPhone up to computer and it asked to restore from backup, I said yes! I had seen somewhere on the net while checking on getting the new iPhone, that I should sync before going to the store and I had done so. Well, this worked beautifully. I did get the proverbial loss of about 6 podcasts as I have described in the past. I had to associate these entries in iTunes with the files I downloaded manually. I also lost my library while at Disney and had to manually recover that too. iPhone rocks. iTunes sucks and rocks. By the way, my old iPhone is for sale on eBay (see picture).

I listened to these Podcasts:

I went to Disney World and had a smashing good time. I ate badly. I didn't exercise. I had so much fun with my son it was amazing!

And before I forget, Motionbased is having trouble syncing with my Garmin Forerunner 305 again!

June 17-22: Running Around Town in Birmingham

Another week of running. I kept up with my usual podcasts during the runs and managed to squeeze in some techie listening here and there too. On the Sunday (June 22, 2008) long run, we ran across a copperhead snake about 15 inches long. It wasn't too scary, but it did take my breath away at first. I am feeling a new bout of iPhone fever with the announcement of the upcoming release of the new iPhone. Sleeker, normal headphone jack, 3G, and GPS, humm.... I haven't decided if I'm upgrading or not.

The online logging from my Garmin Forerunner 305 has been a hit or miss lately. Motionbased wouldn't upload 1 day this week and I have been able to upload, but not save on favoriterun.com for the last 3 runs. Technology is great until it doesn't work. And, this is just flaky enough that I still use both of these sites. Oh, and the Garmin Training Center that comes with the watch portends to work with Google Earth, but that never seems to work either. It says I need to load Google Earth, which is loaded. Damn software and puters.

To top off the end of the week, I got called by the provider of the credit card I used for business expenses. Some vendor's software system got compromised and my number was being used in Mexico by some thugs!

Apr 6-13, 2008: 6 Runs in SC & AL: 9, 3, 5, 3, 3 & 13 Miles

I kept up with the Daily Source Code, caught up with This American Life, and Phedippidations. The Motorola S9 died on Tuesday because I let the battery get too low. iTunes died on Friday because it thought its library got corrupted. That led to hours of recovery work for me. It appears that in such a circumstance, it can rebuild the music library. But, it loses track of downloaded podcast episodes. The podcast episodes show up in playlists, but not in Podcasts or Music (as show in the library part of iTunes). Thus, they can't be deleted, don't really exists, and appear to be stranded on the iPod and iPhone. I discovered that I could get them off of the iPod and iPhone, but unchecking them in bogus playlists I created just for this purpose. What a pain in the ass. I do wish Apple would make these lists a little more transparent and powerful. For example, let me delete from the playlist and ask if I want it removed from the library. And, if I say yes, delete from the real and the ghost library. Further, let me delete directly from the iPod and iPhone. Oh, and while you are at it, Apple, let me build playlists on the device too. I'm sure they are listening to me rant and tomorrow it will be released. Yeah right!

I had a stressful week of work during which I cranked out lots of hours, but I managed to run on plan for the most part. Work will be this way for awhile. Goes with making money, I reckon. All you can do is buck up and go on.

Judy came out to run this Sunday for the first time in awhile. We didn't chat too much, but it was good to see her. I believe she had some plantar fasciitis pain towards the end. She has been battling this injury for awhile :(. I hope all turns out well. Prince and I rode together and he convinced me to run 13 instead of the planned 11. He ran 15.

Geoff Smith created a cool Bohemian Financial Rhapsody (obvious parody of a Queen song), follow this link to Podsafe Music Network and listen to a theme about the current financial woes.

Mar 18 - 22, 2008: 4 Runs in Birmingham & Demopolis, AL: 3, 6, 3, & 4.4 Miles

I kept up with the Daily Source Code, caught up with This American Life, and Phedippidations. All the runs went well. I upgraded to Vista SP1 this week. My Toshiba Portege M200, which I loaded with Vista myself, would not restart at the end as was expected by the installation program. I had to hold the power switch to off and hope it would reboot correctly. It rebooted and loaded SP1 as it should. The presentation on to my 24 inch flatscreen took a little tweaking as well. So, scary, but it worked. It loaded on my home built tower just fine.

The latest This American Life episode, The Ghost of Bobby Dunbar, was extremely interesting. It is about a boy that disappeared around 1912 and was reportedly found 8 months later. After being found, 2 mothers claimed the boy. Many years later, his granddaughter was given 400 newspaper clippings about the incident. She started a multi-year research effort and discovered some startling information. I found this episode extremely engaging and emotional.

I checked my cholesterol on March 20th and it was 159. Yeppee!

I kept up with the Daily Source Code, This American Life, and Phedippidations. Adam keeps going on what the heck are we doing in Afghanistan and Irag. For Afghanistan, I believe we were absolutely just in going in. Iraq, we were not, but we did. Given the tactics and the quite apparent evilness of the Taliban, we simply can't abandon Afghanistan and let them resume the hellish control they had before. Not to mention their welcoming stance to Bin Laden. For Iraq, we created the mess, we have to make sure civility is achieved before we leave.

Which reminds me, a friend of mine sent me a link to a website where you can answer some questions and they score your answers against the Democratic and Republican candidates for the U.S. Presidency race in 2008. Thanks to my Iraq position, I come out favoring several Republican candidates. I haven't made up my mind how I'm voting yet, but this quiz is helping me shape my investigation and thoughts. I do wish McCain was younger.

And, IBM did not release the Notes client for the iPhone as some had predicted. :( Add to that, an idiot analyst apparently said:

However, Kevin McIsaac, an analyst at research firm IBRS, said he's not sure Lotus Notes will have a large impact on enterprise adoption of the device. "I can't really imagine someone who's really hip and cool--like an iPhone user--wanting to use Lotus Notes," he said.

Like no cool person happens to work for a company who has choosen Notes as the corporate email system. Give me a break. Note to self=>Upon noticing any analyst report authored by Kevin McIsaac, execute skeptic reception.

11/20/07: 5 Mile Run: Neighborhood

I listened to the latest Daily Source Code and started the latest Phedippidations during this morning run. I did have to go around my elbow to get to my @ss to get them into iTunes however. I subscribe via my Podshow channel. For some reason, my channel started messing up last week. I have to log in to Podshow and select to play my channel before the RSS file iTunes reads updates. And, further Pheppidations doesn't show up at all. So, I figured out work arounds to the problem for now. I left a comment on Adam Curry's log and he has responded indicating that while his channel is working, that the techs did find something and implementing the fix. I will test and let them know. I can't really complain. I love this channel thing at Podshow and it has worked flawlessly for a long time.

I altered this week's running schedule slightly to accommodate a 10K race on Thanksgiving, Thursday. This is the 31st Annual Montclair Run here in Birmingham. It should be fun.

09/12/07: 5 Mile Run: Neighborhood

I listened to the lastest Daily Source Code and the rest of the latest Accident Hash during this morning run. iTunes struck again. The last time I sync'd, I right clicked on my channel node in iTunes, right-clicked, and selected "Update Podcast". I swear I got the visual cue indicating nothing to update. I clicked on the red "X" indicating that I wished to close iTunes. I switched the input focus to some other window since iTunes takes forever to do anything. Sometime later, I saw some notice blinking on my system bar. It was iTunes telling me that it was in the middle of downloading and asked something like "Continue...or...". I am sure I selected the option indicating I wanted the download to finish. Well, it didn't.

The show enumerated the various reasons why terrorist hijackers weren't the reason the World Trade Center buildings collapsed. I have to say I don't buy the explanations that suggested conspiracy of our own doing (our own as in some US government planned job or something). Adam referenced a video that you may want to check out to form your own opionion. In fact, it seems interesting that on one hand Adam claims that the CIA and such are such colossal boobs, but we have some organization that could demolish the World Trade Center live on TV and blame on someone else who happily takes the blame. Give me a break! The extremists are real and they really did and want to kill us. It is that freaking simple. I would agree that the path that leads to why they want to kill us is less simple.

09/09/07: 8.5 Mile Run: Brownell-Shades Creek Greenway

No Judy. It seems that she met her new bough, she has not been able to get out to run with me. Well, good for her (and, yes, I mean that). She deserves some happiness and companionship is an excellent way to get some happiness. I have also failed to contact her lately, so maybe she thinks I am not behaving dependably and just running from home. So, I just need to drop her a line and say "hey!".

I listened to the Daily Source Code and Phedippidations during this run. I didn't take the iPhone on the run because ITUNES SUCKS. I got up early to download any new podcasts so I could sync the iPod and the iPhone. Phedippidations disappeared before I could sync it to the iPhone. It made it to the iPhone. Then, the Daily Source Code did not go the the Channel folder per my subscription, but when to its own separate folder. It loaded to the iPod, but not the iPhone. I tried moving it to the usual folder, dragging it to the playlist, and the bottom line is NOTHING F**K*NG worked. The show went to the iPod, but not the iPhone. So, I ran with the iPod. Apple will you F**K*NG FIX THIS!

The run went great, just check out the pace. Yee haw!

08/09/07: 6 Mile Run: Neighborhood

I listened to Phedippidations during this morning run. Good show, but the discussion based Dr. George Sheehan's, This Running Life, that explained significant portions of personality based on one's body type (endomorph, mesomorph, ectomorph) was a little too reductionistic in my opinion. The development of one's personality (well the rest of the person too really) is a result of a dynamic interaction between the person and its environment (all of it). One's body type influences the environment and vice versa. The range and pervasiveness on other variables in the environment is enormous. I suspect that a scientific investigation of personality and body type would reveal a much more tenuous relationship than that reported by Dr. Sheehan.

I listened to a Scott Berkun on a podcast and had to checkout a Scott's blog as a result of their description of Asshole Driven Development. What a hoot! I have been in software development for nearly 20 years and I was very amused by the satirical list of software development lifecycle methods.
