Off to the Computer Boneyard (Staples)

John and I rounded up all of the old computers and peripherals around the basement and my electronic junk closet and headed to Staples. Staples will recycle electronics safely. Note the picture of a very old IBM portable computer next to a MacBook and an iPad. What a hoot!

Printing to HP Deskjet 722C from Mac via Windows Server 2008

I got a MacBook late last year. I am running Mac OS X 10.6.2. I learned how to use the network to connect to printers connected to Windows' machines, but the Mac doesn't have a driver for my ancient, but very well working HP Deskjet 722C printer. I was printing to my wife's more modern printer, but she disconnects her machine too frequently and I have to walk over with the Mac and physically connect. Yuk! I had given up when I found a gem on the Internet, How to Use a Printer Attached to a Windows XP Computer in Mac OS X, that led me to a solution.

Now, the instructions did work exactly as written for me, but contained everything I needed to resolve. Here are the key points that vary from the instructions in the article that led to my success:

Do exactly as instructed for items 1-3. Except, choose to share "Ghostscript722C"; you will see why in a moment.

I selected "HP Color LaserJet 2500 PS" for the Print Driver instead of "Apple Color LW 12/660 PS" which was not installed on my system. I just looked for something with "PS" and went with HP for obvious reasons (the printer is an HP, but I don't think it matters as long as it supports postscript).

I did have to make the registry change suggested in the instructions:

After googling the error I found the following solution on redmons homepage:

http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/redmon/

"gsprint can't find any printers because RedMon runs as the default
user which doesn't have any printers. Copy the printer configuration
in the registry from the current user to the default user. This problem
is related to using mswinpr2 on Windows NT."

And the solution is found here:
http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/redmon/muir.htm

Copying the stringvalue with *the name of the real, working
printer* (as phrased in part3) found in the registry location.
Using Start->Run->Regedit (be careful, because it can cause severe
damage to windows if something wrong is done with regedit):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Devices

f.ex. (I suppose in your case, if it was on windows 2000):
String name: "HP DeskJet 722C" (The printername)
String value: "winspool,FILE:"

To the registry location:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Devices

String name: "HP DeskJet 722C" (The printername)
String value: "winspool,FILE:"
My String value was "LPT1:", not "FILE:" though.

And, this note (also in the main article referenced above), led me to the final conclusion which worked:

I'd like to contribute one note for the instructions that other
multi-computer switchers might find useful:

With 10.3 Panther, one has the option to just share the redirected
printer as a standard Windows share instead of using Unix print services.
I basically just followed your instructions up to step 3, but then just
turned on sharing. I was then able to find the printer from the Printer
Setup Utility using the Windows Printing menu item.
However, I used the Add Printer, Advanced Tab

  • Type: Windows
  • Device: Another Device
  • URL: smb://IBMServer/Ghostscript722C (Note: "IBMServer is server name where printer is connected)
  • Name: IBMServer
  • Location:
  • Print Using: Generic PostScript Printer

And, walla, I am printing.

August 11-16: More Exercise, Listening, + Windows 7

I have had another busy week. I have managed to rebuild a computer based on the KM400-M2 motherboard. This is a Frankenstein machine. It is an ancient Gateway case, the KM400-M2 motherboard, a CD- RW, and DVD-RW from other long since retired boxes. I put in a 500GB SATA drive, booted it up with a Windows 7 installation 7 DVD and now it is running. Oh, it is my 6 year old's computer. So, my 6 year old has the most recent operating system in the house. LOL. I will be using it via RDP to check it out and play. There is nothing like putting your hands and arms in the bowels of a wrangling mess of electronics and coming out the other side with a working machine. Yeah, I still got my metal thumb.

My first impressions of Windows 7 are good. The first being that while it offers a sleeker look on the desktop and offers very readable help along the way, it did not shock me with such large differences I got distracted. Too early for me to say much as I have not yet completed a detailed analysis or a reading of someone else's detailed analysis of the changes from XP or Vista. This particular machine was running XP. I, however, use XP at work and Vista on my main personal machine. I have major hankering for a MacBook Pro. The wife has given me permission and I trying to determine if I really want to take the leap. My Toshiba Portege M200 has been cranky along quite well on Vista since I increased the RAM to 2GB. My XP boxes has to be rebooted several times a week. Meanwhile, the Vista machine could just go on and on and on and on.

Two of my team members for the upcoming USMC Ultimate Mud Run Challenge, Steve and Robin, had to withdraw because she is injured. But, I was able to secure a friend of mine, Perry Chapman and his son to be their replacements. Perry and I have done this before together and I haven't seen him in person in years. So, I am very much looking forward to it. We will still have a solid team. I am sorry that Steve and Robin can not make it. They are great team mates.

I am convinced after last week's Tri that triathletes differ from runners in that most are seriously fit. It seems to me that the spread from first to last is a lot tighter than in a run. But, it could just be my imagination. Regardless, I will continue training in all 3 sports all winter. I am not expecting big changes in my running and cycling. For swimming, however, I do have some significant work to do. I will not be logging distance and time for the most part. My swimming teacher with whom I have 1 more lesson is going to provide some workouts for me to do. This involve concentrating on various components of swimming for subsets of the total laps I will swim. So, I will be tracking distance, but not time. I have got to get my kick and breathing in shape. At least, I know where I need work.

Oct. 14-22: Running in Two States & Other Rambling

I'm still traveling a lot. Last week, I was in New York for an information sharing meeting between my employer and a large hardware/software platform vendor. I learned a lot and the conversations were extremely interesting. A lot of SaaS (Software as a Service), cloud computing, and collaboration stuff. These are the buzzwords of the day. But, I have to say it is amazing to watch these types of changes come along. Simple ideas really can drive big impacts to the way we think about solving problems.

I am voting for the Obama ticket, but I have to say I think Palin is getting an unfair and undue shake by the press and apparently her own party. The whole "how much she spent on clothes" brouhaha just smells like sexism and pettiness to me. I actually like listening to her talk and find that she carries me along as she does. I believe you is a tough cookie with strong leadership capabilities. I just find it interesting to see how folks polarize themselves.

Side note: I am no longer logging podcasts listening activity in Google Spreadsheets. It was just not a value adding activity. Logging it here is plenty.

I got JayBird's bluetooth stereo headset for my birthday. So far, I like them in general. I hate wired headsets. I am finding that getting a good feeling fit is difficult and that the controls are difficult to trigger while running. But, these are minor nuisances when compare to a wired headset and I suspect I will learn how to mitigate these issues with complete satisfaction. Now, let's hope for stability.
I replaced the Motorola s9 which were crap. I must have asked Motorola to honor the warranty with a replacement for 4-5 times. The warranty ran out and the last headset died like the rest. The buttons gradually stopped working and the volume buttons would start just spontaneously driving the volumn up or down complete with the beep indicating the volume button was pressed.

August 12-17: Running & Cycling in Birmingham

A busy, but good week. I finally bought an HDTV, a 37LG30, a 37" diagonal LCD at 720p. We had an Olympics party last night and the wife wanted a good viewing. We went with the this model because it was available, fit in our cabinet, and had a better picture that comparable sized TV's we looked at. So, far, so good. The party went well too.

Adam Curry has basically turned the Daily Source Code into conspiracy theory central. What a shame! I miss the tech talk and just general all around notes about his life. This conspiracy crap, for me, is just noise. But, it is his show and I have a fast forward button.

Work has me diving into more low level code than I get to which is exciting for me. So, I'm learning more directly about JavaServer Faces, Dojo, and Ajax.

June 24-29: Running from Lightening: Goodbye George!

First, let me say I was touched by learning of George Carlin's death. I feel like I see the world much as he did. Although, I could not express is as comedically or eloquently as he did. One on my favorite recent runs including listening to a snippet of George in on of Adam Curry's Daily Source Code shows while I was in Barcelona. I hope that George enjoyed a life as enriched as the enrichment he provided the rest of us. I only knew him through his professional persona, but it was all good. Goodbye George, here's to you!

I had what felt like a near death experience of my own this week. I went out for my Wednesday run at about 6:30 pm. My son's swimming class had ended early just prior to this because there were storms in the area. I checked the weather online and their were clouds approaching our area, but they were small and blotchy. So, I thought I could handle the rain and it didn't look that bad outside. I didn't see menacing looking clouds, hear any thunder, or see any lightening. So, off I went. Well, on the way back lightening struck the ground 30 feet in front of me! It sure got my attention and next time I may just take the weather a little more seriously.

I coded up my first web pages for the iPhone. Quite enjoyable, I forgot how much I just love the pure act of writing code and seeing results. I especially like the "webkit" CSS tags for rounded corners, shadows and such for boxes in Safari. Cool stuff.

On the negative side, my Motorola Motorokr S9 headset that was recently replaced (for about the 4th time) that is no longer under warranty, lots its up volume control today. I hope I never accidentally turn it down! I love no wire and this headset when it is working. I am incredibly disappointed that it just won't last.

Favoriterun GPS sync capabilities came back. I reported my problems to their help email and did get a response indicating they were looking at it. Thanks!

I went bike shopping yesterday. I rode a lot in 1980-82, but have not really rode any at all since. for those few years, I rode at least 15 miles everyday to and from work in the USAF. In those days, I rode on a converted touring bike, a Peugeot (see picture). I took off the bumpers, handle bars, and friction based lights. I put on drop handle bars, small bumpers just to deflect water from the rider, and battery operated lights. I rode mostly at night since I worked the midnight to 7:00 am shift. Well, I rode a collection of modern bikes yesterday (Giant, Trek, and Specialized) and man if my memory is right, what a difference. Of course, I am still not sure what to purchase I liked the feel of the Trek, but some of the Giant's had better components and supposed a more comfort styled frame. I will be buying something soon. I feel a tri coming.

June 17-22: Running Around Town in Birmingham

Another week of running. I kept up with my usual podcasts during the runs and managed to squeeze in some techie listening here and there too. On the Sunday (June 22, 2008) long run, we ran across a copperhead snake about 15 inches long. It wasn't too scary, but it did take my breath away at first. I am feeling a new bout of iPhone fever with the announcement of the upcoming release of the new iPhone. Sleeker, normal headphone jack, 3G, and GPS, humm.... I haven't decided if I'm upgrading or not.

The online logging from my Garmin Forerunner 305 has been a hit or miss lately. Motionbased wouldn't upload 1 day this week and I have been able to upload, but not save on favoriterun.com for the last 3 runs. Technology is great until it doesn't work. And, this is just flaky enough that I still use both of these sites. Oh, and the Garmin Training Center that comes with the watch portends to work with Google Earth, but that never seems to work either. It says I need to load Google Earth, which is loaded. Damn software and puters.

To top off the end of the week, I got called by the provider of the credit card I used for business expenses. Some vendor's software system got compromised and my number was being used in Mexico by some thugs!

June 3-4: Runnning in the Neighborhood & Vista is Running Fast Now

I kept up with the Daily Source Code, This American Life, and Phedippidations. I got fired up listening to the latest episode of This American Life, The Prosecutor. It is so hard to believe how politics, office and governmental, can get so personal and forget that truth and service are frequently the better goals.

I have been suffering with slow performance on my personal laptop for a longtime (like since I loaded Vista). I bought 2GB's worth of sims yesterday and stuck 'em in the Toshiba. And, walla, responds like I expect. I hate that I waited so long. But, all is well now.

Apr 16-19, 2008: 4 Runs in AL: 3, 6, 3, & 9.3 (Statue-to-Statue Race)

I kept up with the Daily Source Code, caught up with This American Life, and Phedippidations. Steve, host of Phedippidations, is about to run Boston. So, that last few shows have been about the course, Steve's preparation, and some historical stuff about Boston. Good shows.

Gear Rants:

  • The Motorola S9 bluetooth headset has lot its ability to manage volume again. So, I will be sending it back for the fourth time.
  • iTunes continues to sporadically delete the physical file for a podcast. This forces me to download the file manually and tell iTunes where the file is located so I can manage this in iTunes. I first logged this in the Apple discussion forum on March 25, 2007 (Yes, over a year ago!). Apple archived this discussion, so I added it again (After a Year, Podcasts file STILL disappear from harddrive during sync). I would have to say that as a podcatcher, iTunes f**king sucks! I still have ghost listings of podcasts that are not on my harddrive, not in my iTunes library, not in my iTunes Podcasts library, but show up in iTunes playlists (Stranded Podcasts and Playlists That Have "Non-Existent" Podcast episodes on Apple's Discussion Forum).
  • Finally, the Garmin 305's battery was died during my 3 mile run on April 16. I don't know if I accidentally left it on, its button got pushed in the special carry case I bought, or what. I am assuming user error at this point.

My running is going well. I just finished the Statue-to-Statue run yesterday and look at my history:

  • 2008 - 1:17:39
  • 2007 - 1:20:48
  • 2006 - 1:25:55
I sure can't complain about that. This is a very tough run with some serious hills.

A friend of mine sent me this humorous picture since I am reading The God Delusion:

What a hoot!

Mar 18 - 22, 2008: 4 Runs in Birmingham & Demopolis, AL: 3, 6, 3, & 4.4 Miles

I kept up with the Daily Source Code, caught up with This American Life, and Phedippidations. All the runs went well. I upgraded to Vista SP1 this week. My Toshiba Portege M200, which I loaded with Vista myself, would not restart at the end as was expected by the installation program. I had to hold the power switch to off and hope it would reboot correctly. It rebooted and loaded SP1 as it should. The presentation on to my 24 inch flatscreen took a little tweaking as well. So, scary, but it worked. It loaded on my home built tower just fine.

The latest This American Life episode, The Ghost of Bobby Dunbar, was extremely interesting. It is about a boy that disappeared around 1912 and was reportedly found 8 months later. After being found, 2 mothers claimed the boy. Many years later, his granddaughter was given 400 newspaper clippings about the incident. She started a multi-year research effort and discovered some startling information. I found this episode extremely engaging and emotional.

I checked my cholesterol on March 20th and it was 159. Yeppee!

01/06/08: 15 Mile Run: Birmingham, AL

I got off to a rough start today. I got to Brownell and started my rituals for getting ready and just didn't quite feel right. So, I got back in the car, put a towel over my legs and slept for about 30 minutes. Then, got up drove to a service station, went to the bathroom, and returned. Now, I was ready. And, running would have likely been a burden given what I left at the station (TMI, I'm sure). I put the iPod on shuffle through my huge running favorites collection and got to it. The run went well.

At about 9 miles the bluetooth headset stopped providing tunes. The bluetooth adapter, TEN Technology naviPlay Bluetooth Stereo Adapter for iPod, had spontaneously shutdown. I started it up again and after a few minutes, it did it again. So, I put the wired headset on. I am hoping it was just that I had drained the charge and the adapter is fine. I, however, am fairly confident that the charge should have been fine. Dang technology.

09/07/07: 3 Mile Run: Neighborhood

I listened to the lastest Daily Source Code during this morning run. I am expecting a stress filled overloaded day, so I needed this run to try to settle my mind and spirit before starting the day. It worked, but unfortunately I don't expect it to last long. Absent from my life at the moment is a strong sense of control and adequate control of time and load. I assume this happens to most of us from time-to-time when the demands just seem to overpower and out pace one's ability to deliver. On I go hoping like hell catch up or at least stay one step ahead. Is the singularity here yet?

Oh, before I forget, I tried to listen to the latest Phedippidations via streaming to the iPhone on the way back from the beach. Unlike the Daily Source Code I streamed recently, it didn't work. :(

08/25/07: 3 Mile Run: Neighborhood

I put the iPod on shuffle and let the music flow for this run. Lots of people were out and around the lake this morning. I received 2 interesting text messages from AT&T. The national press and the Internet caught on to an amusing video about someone's iPhone bill. It came in a box. I received the following text message:

Makes you think the video was definitely genuine. What a hoot!

08/07/07: 3 Mile Run: Blythewood, SC

I listened to Daily Source Code during this morning run. I didn't take the wireless headset given the recent woes with its use (see previous posts for my whining). The Garwin Timex system also screwed up, IMHO. I believe that you have to get the green light on the monitor indicating that you have established connection with the satellites before you indicate your desire to use the GPS services on the watch. I turned on the monitor, pressed the watches buttons to reset the values from the last run, selected distance as the GPS related metric to display, and I got the green light after awhile. Silly me; I pressed start and started running. After about a mile I looked at the watch and distance was 0.00. The GPS light was off. Arghhhhhh. Turned it on.

It started tracking distance. I guessed at a turned around point. I noted the time at the turn around. I figured I would just take the watch's end time - this midpoint value multiply by 2 and there you go. Well, using that mechanism showed I ran 7:10 pace! Yeah right.

08/05/07: 10.5 Mile Run: Brownell-Shades Creek Loop

No Judy. So, I put the iPod on shuffle for music, turned on the bluetooth, and put on the headset, ran 100 feet, and had to get the wired headset. There is nothing more frustrating than using high tech gear that just doesn't work at all. When it works this bluetooth and headset are great. No wire, easy control of the volume, start/pause, and skip to next track are wonderful. But, way too often I have to reset and reset hoping that the skiping and garbling stop. I think it boils down to "bluetooth sucks".

It was and felt like a slow run. I got a late start because we were up late thanks to a party at our house. I had 1 glass of red wine and I could feel it when I got up. That sucks too. But, I got the run in.

08/03/07: 3 Mile Run: Neighborhood

I listened to Daily Source Code during this morning run. I have been using the iPod because I lost the TTY adapter for the iPhone. I love the iPhone, but I would like to know what f**king genius had the dumbass idea that a headset jack would be better if it wasn't standard. STUPID! I am going to have to order online as apparently the only Apple store in town here will never get anymore. I will be ordering 3 of them ($30) just so I can have one at the end of every wire I plug into the headset jack. Out of all of the irritants of this new device, this is the more irritating one.

Chat on the iPhone!

After using up my first month's 200 text messages, I decided there must be some kind of option. I found meebo. Safari seems to be at bit buggy with it since it has crashed a couple of times. But, I did get it to work and it looks promising. Getting chat in the iPhone would be cool.

07/25/07: 6 Mile Run: Neighborhood

I listened to Daily Source Code. Adam has moved on to talking about his iPhone. He got brave and hacked it to put in a SIM from his existing cell phone based on his reading on the web (he didn't put the link in the show notes, so I think this is the right one). He likes his for the same reasons I like mine. He did find some of the same frustrations including the difficulty with moving pictures from the iPhone to the computer. His complaint helped motivate me to try a little more exploration. First, I discovered on the Apple Support forums that someone had noted that the iPhone had to be unlocked to be able to use the file systems capabilities to simply drag and drop files via the Windows' Explorer. However, I have never had any luck getting the iPhone's camera to show up in the Explorer. Well, I managed to get it done. Here's how:

  • Reboot
  • Unlock iPhone
  • Put iPhone in cradle
  • Set the default action to view and move files via Windows Explorer on the dialog box that comes up (I also set that as the default action for the Apple iPhone by clicking on the set options button on the dialog)
Now, it seems to work everytime. Yeppee!

This was another evening run during which I didn't notice that I was going so slow. In fact, I felt good. However, I didn't feel fast either.

07/18/07: 5 Mile Run: Neighborhood

I took the iPod and bluetooth headset to listen to music in shuffle mode. I have changed the earpieces and the flapping noises are gone. So, I'm pleased with that. I also cover everything in plastic now. This was an afternoon run. So, I was surprised that I didn't really notice the 10 more degrees than my usual morning runs.
